Beautiful Balcony in Romania
The Alchimica Hyperdesmo system is used all over the world and below is a case study we've received from the Romanian office. It's of a balcony that was renovated on a restaurant in the mountains (just look at that view!) and the client wanted something different to the smooth, grey finish you will be familiar with from Hyperdesmo HAA...
On balconies or buildings that have a style, you're going to want something that look the part too. On this job from Romania the owner wanted the new balcony decking made waterproof but also wanted a stone carpet finish.
Fortunately we have the ideal solution for this- Hyperdesmo PB-2k! It's cheaper than the HAA system but still offers the same waterproofing capabilities. It has to be covered (in this case a stone carpet) made by mixing Hyperdesmo-T with granules) but it's root and puncture resistant AND is self-repairing. This means that when something is laid on it, if it should get punctured by e.g. a nail or screw it will repair itself. It's also great as a green roofing system because it is resistant to roots rupturing it.
The application process is very similar to Hyperdesmo HAA. Once the surface is prepared, sealant needs to be applied to all of the joints. You'd also apply sealant around any detailing and upstand joints. Next you'd reinforce the joints using either butyl tape or a geotextile fleece applied wet on wet. Finally the PB-2k is applied to the whole surface. It is a two component system that you mix together prior to using it but it can be applied in one coat.
Once this is done you can fix a top system. PB-2k isn't UV stable and will degrade over time if left exposed. However, once covered it will be sound for upwards of 20 years. You can fix decking, stone carpet (as in this case) and it also provides a great waterproofing solution for green roofing systems. You can also use it for water-proofing under tiles in bathrooms and as a tanking solution in basements.
Like many of our polyurethane based system, Hyperdesmo PB-2k is extremely flexible. It is
chemically very resistant (other than to UV) and gives great adhesion to all of the most common substrate types. It is also very fast curing and, applied correctly, it will last a long time. As it is two-component you only need to mix what you need and can easily store the rest for future use.
